stuff and things

I have had all these ideas for posts that wouldn't bore you to tears - ideas that strike when driving home, after overhearing a colleague's phone conversation, when I'm out getting lunch... by the time I get home, I have lost my idea and am unwilling to even turn on the computer. Last week was special - the creeping crud struck again. As often as I've been ill this year, you'd think I went around licking doorknobs. Ick. Just the thought nauseates me. Almost most as much as hearing someone in the next stall flush and leave without the water even running in the sink. Who thinks that's okay? What kind of person does that? Not a rhetorical question. Especially in a public restroom... one thing you can say for the folks that piss all over the seat from hovering, you know their germaphobic selves will at least wash their hands.

My 4th of July weekend was quiet and restful. My sister and binlaw closed on their first house July 2nd; July 4th we spent most of the day moving their stuff. As we've moved my sister's stuff something like 16 times in the past 12 years, it was nice to move her into a place where she'll stay and be able to settle in... ironically, she hates moving. Mind you, not all of the moves were her choice - moving home after graduating college, for instance, or the townhouse she and J. rented in DC and then a few months later were told to move out because the owner had decided he was moving back in... This house is theirs and it is good.

It is a lovely house. Not far off the street, but set down about 6 feet below road level, so it feels private. Quiet neighborhood. Lots and lots of storage, good natural light, a great deck. I look forward to seeing it with everything in it's place - which should be by this Wednesday. She's a fast unpacker, my sister. I think I shall hire her when I finally commit to move. I've started thinking it's time to look. Again. Maybe I'll find something tempting this time... the thought of signing a lease still gives me shudders. I have no inclination to go anywhere, but if I sign a lease, even the remote possibility is gone. Sigh. Anyone know of a cure for wanderlust?

I am heading to DC tomorrow for a weekend visit with my friend M. After years of saving like a fiend, she has finally purchased a home in the Alexandria, VA area. I can't wait to see her and her lovely new domicile. We don't have fixed plans for the weekend, but I know I'll be taking tons of pictures as my new camera has arrived. A Canon SD870. I shall read the instruction manual as my in-flight reading. Nothing like a new camera to rekindle my inner tourist flame.

I believe you can experience wanderlust and still build a nest.
