Wednesday

One more race left.

The end of this NASCAR season is so much fun. It's a bit odd for me because I've not before been anxious about the results. Last year Jimmie Johnson was in contention for the championship and yet I wasn't anxious. I have not the slightest personal stake in the outcome of the season other than I want the 48 team to win. If it were my friend's kid or a colleague's uncle, I could understand my strong desire to see the team win, but a bunch of guys I don't know? I can't explain it. I guess I have to apologize to all those folks I used to rag because they were fans of a college team that wasn't their alma mater. Now I get it.

People talk about the connection between the fans and the drivers; how this connection is fostered by the drivers being accessible and having their personal bios be as much a part of the information out there as their racing resume. Maybe I've been sucked into this. I don't know much about JJ's personal background, but I still feel a genuine fondness for the guy. From interviews and watching the interaction between him and his team, I like him. I look forward to seeing what he does next.

Sunday between 3:30 and whenever the race ends, I'm simply going to enjoy the excitement and anticipation and hopefully Jimmie's victory - in championship and maybe the race. Jimmie Johnson needs to finish 35th (out of 43) or better to win the third championship in a row. Too cool.

So, now most of you know more about this week's race than you ever thought you'd have to know.
