Monday

Greetings from Amsterdam!

I made it. The flight was easy, shorter than expected, no screaming kids, heavily perfumed women, or drunken folk trying to chat me up. Plenty of water to drink.

I brought the sunshine with me. Yesterday was a beautiful morning and I went to the market with A. - near their house is a six day a week market. After that, A. went for a hair cut and I went into the center of town with M. so he could run an errand relating to the suprise honeymoon trip he's planning. Riding the tram to Museum Square we passed a bunch of little kids playing baseball. A. and M. had a family reunion to attend yesterday evening, so I was able to a nap from about 2 to 4:30, watch a good movie, have dinner, and go to bed around 10p.

Not exactly a rip-roaring first day, but it was just what I could handle.

Today was again a beautiful Fall day with mostly sunshine. A. and M. live in a residential area just off the tourist maps, so we took the train to the central station and wandered the city from there. Through the red light distict, past the Old Church - surrounded by prostitutes already at their morning's work - on our way to Tony's New York Bagels for tea and a muffin (A. & M. had cheesecake brownies). We wandered about some more on our way to a fantastic movie theater just off Rembrandt Square. Pathe Tuschinski - it is a stunning art deco style theater that has been renovated.

We saw the new Pride and Prejudice. I enjoyed it, but it is not for purists. The style is busier, more lush, the characters are less reserved in their interaction, modernized to some degree. But I enjoyed it.

After the movie, we walked home. A walk of about an hour, past the Jewish History museum, the botanical garden, the zoo. Dinner at home was typical Dutch pancakes (think thick crepe with the toppings cooked along with the batter). Cheese and mushrooms in mine.

Tomorrow I will head to the Rijksmuseum. Because of the massive renovation project they have undertaken, only one wing is open to show the masterpieces in their collection. I think one wing will be enough to occupy my brain.

What a terrific idea. Is this one of the reasons you wants the digital camera? You are so clever. Can't wait to read the next entry. kpg
