I've started reading the Twilight books by Stephenie Meyer. (When you type her name into Yahoo!, the first four auto-options once you've typed in Stephen are Stephen King, Stephen Hawking, Stephenie Meyer, Stephen Colbert.) E. gave me Twilight for my birthday and I read it in three days... I paced myself after the first evening or I would have read it in two days - sleep optional. My first thought when started reading was "oh, no. this is going to be too difficult." The author's style reminds me of being in a writing class and sharing chapters... Twilight is written by one of the more interesting folks in class, but not necessarily the most talented. When I read that she conceived the story, wrote the book and was accepted for publishing within a six month span, I understand better the quality of the writing.
That said, I understand what all the fuss is about. When the story is wonderful and the characters are people you'd like to meet, you don't worry so much about pesky things like style.
