I had an "oh, hell, am I really that old?" moment the other day. A kid was wearing tight jeans, well-beaten Converse All-Stars, a red and black check scarf over a white t-shirt with a frayed, once dark blue jean jacket. A flashback to early-teen awkwardness. Not that I was cool enough to wear that particular outfit to the mall. Oh, no. I was what is referred to, in faux politesse, as husky; clothing choices were limited. Thankfully, things are different now. There are fewer girls wandering around in black Madonna inspired lace ensembles, for one, and I no longer have to wait for my mom to pick me up outside Mervyn's. That and I may still be husky, but now I can own it wtihout shame.
I have also recently noticed that many of the bands I'm listening to, the bands that are new to me, are channeling the 80s. Monomen, stellastarr*, The Fascination Movement. Someone beat them wtih the pretty end of the 80s stick. So, naturally, I'm digging through the archives and revisiting old favorites. I have to confess a refreshed opinion that "Your Love" by the Outfield is the best skeevy song EVER. The link will take you to the delightfully 80s video on YouTube
