Today I received word that I have been nominated for a position in the Peace Corps. Eastern Europe, projected departure in March 2011.
In a few weeks, I should be receiving my packet of medical forms. Thus will begin the part of the process that leads the impatient to despair. The medical review is intensive and covers the minutia of an applicant's medical history. If I am diligent and can correctly anticipate their concerns, I may avoid throwing myself into the pit of despair. Here's hoping.
Once I pass the medical review, I must pass the final suitability review where they take into account my skills, my medical clearance level and available slots. There is a 40% chance that the assignment region/country will differ from that in my nomination. According to the calculator on Peace Corps Wiki, the top five countries to which secondary English teaching PCV are assigned are Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Romania and Mozambique. Yes, Mozambique. That said, there is the possibility that something random will happen in my assignment selection and so I am mentally prepared to be summer hot all year round.
It is petrifyingly exciting.

So is it for "Eastern Europe and Central Asia" or just for Eastern Europe particularly?
By the way, I know PC would hook you up with PCVs to talk to, but if you were looking for someone to chat with about whatever assignment you get (fingers crossed!) before you accept it, we also might know someone who's spent time in these places. Our friend Jen was a PCV in Kazakhstan (and is a vegetarian to boot), our friend Emily is currently doing research in Moldova, etc.
So, is Scot the one who put this idea in your head?
